Your cool fantasy character has a respectable bunch of options for some rugged, extravagant, and exciting character design. We can use archetypes to determine a loose starting point for your character’s appearance. It’s that kind of knowledge of detail that informs your character’s actions in a deeper way. It’s those depths and complexities that add up to really make a character stand out. Researching and understanding how (and why) people react in situations is a powerful character development tool.
Character Design Follows the Game’s Story
This brings us to the next important step, which is making different views as reference materials. Is it his appearance, his personality, or a combination of both? You could say that it's the chemistry between the character's different traits, but that's only if he has a body AND a personality. If you're talking about Sackboy from LittleBigPlanet, then you could say it's his appearance that matters most. But if we're talking about the narrator from The Stanley Parable, then it's his personality that defines him, not his appearance since we never see him in-game. His witty remarks and posh voice is what helps us empathize with him as we guide the titular character through the environment.

Selden, who in the meantime had resolved to ask Lily to marry him, sees Gerty at the boarding-house and learns that Lily is dead. Overcome by sorrow, Selden begins cleaning Lily’s room and discovers Lily’s letter to Gus Trenor. At that moment, he becomes fully aware of Lily’s strong moral principles. Despite knowing that they will never be able to live together and express their love for each other, he takes comfort in knowing that their love is stronger than death. She is perceived as carrying "a general air of embodying a 'spicy paragraph';"(70)[1] and according to Mrs. Trenor, ". . .most of her alimony is paid by other women's husbands." (91)[1] She sponges money from Gus Trenor to cover her bills much to his wife's chagrin. Although Gus accepts romantic favors from Mrs. Fisher in exchange for paying her bills and investing her money in the stock market, he considers her a "battered wire-puller"(94)[1] in comparison to the fresh and unsullied Miss Bart.
Emma Stone would like to be called by her real name, if you don’t mind
Seated under the cheerless blaze of the drawing-room chandelier—Mrs.Peniston never lit the lamps unless there was “company”—Lily seemed towatch her own figure retreating down vistas of neutral-tinted dulness toa middle-age like Grace Stepney’s. When she ceased to amuse Judy Trenorand her friends she would have to fall back on amusing Mrs. Peniston;whichever way she looked she saw only a future of servitude to the whimsof others, never the possibility of asserting her own eager individuality. Meanwhile, as October advanced she had to face the alternative ofreturning to the Trenors or joining her aunt in town. Even the desolatingdulness of New York in October, and the soapy discomforts of Mrs.Peniston’s interior, seemed preferable to what might await her atBellomont; and with an air of heroic devotion she announced her intentionof remaining with her aunt till the holidays.

Mrs. Dorset was, in fact, engaged ina new sentimental experiment, of which Mrs. Fisher’s late property, NedSilverton, was the rosy victim; and at such moments, as Judy Trenor hadonce remarked, she felt a peculiar need of distracting her husband’sattention. Dorset was as difficult to amuse as a savage; but even hisself-engrossment was not proof against Lily’s arts, or rather these wereespecially adapted to soothe an uneasy egoism. Her experience with PercyGryce stood her in good stead in ministering to Dorset’s humours, and ifthe incentive to please was less urgent, the difficulties of hersituation were teaching her to make much of minor opportunities. As she sat, on the Saturday afternoon, on the terrace at Bellomont, shesmiled at Mrs. Trenor’s fear that she might go too fast. If such awarning had ever been needful, the years had taught her a salutarylesson, and she flattered herself that she now knew how to adapt her paceto the object of pursuit. In the case of Mr. Gryce she had found it wellto flutter ahead, losing herself elusively and luring him on from depthto depth of unconscious intimacy.

Their appearance confirmed the impression that the show hadbeen staged regardless of expense, and emphasized its resemblance to oneof those “costume-plays” in which the protagonists walk through thepassions without displacing a drapery. The ladies stood in unrelatedattitudes calculated to isolate their effects, and the men hung aboutthem as irrelevantly as stage heroes whose tailors are named in theprogramme. It was Selden himself who unwittingly fused the group byarresting the attention of one of its members. His own view of the situation forced itself upon her after a few moments’conversation.
Appreciation: Terence Davies, a master filmmaker, brought quiet passion and lyrical beauty to the screen
For a moment her presence of mind forsook her.She had more than once been in situations where a quick sword-play of withad been needful to cover her retreat; but her frightened heart-throbstold her that here such skill would not avail. But society, amused for a while at playing Cinderella, soon wearied ofthe hearthside role, and welcomed the Fairy Godmother in the shape of anymagician powerful enough to turn the shrunken pumpkin back again into thegolden coach. The mere fact of growing richer at a time when mostpeople’s investments are shrinking, is calculated to attract enviousattention; and according to Wall Street rumours, Welly Bry and Rosedalehad found the secret of performing this miracle. About this time she was farther cheered by an invitation to spend theThanksgiving week at a camp in the Adirondacks. The invitation was onewhich, a year earlier, would have provoked a less ready response, for theparty, though organized by Mrs. Fisher, was ostensibly given by a lady ofobscure origin and indomitable social ambitions, whose acquaintance Lilyhad hitherto avoided.
It wasagreeable to shock Mrs. Peniston, but not to shock her to the verge ofanger. Miss Stepney was not sufficiently familiar with the classic dramato have recalled in advance how bearers of bad tidings are proverbiallyreceived, but she now had a rapid vision of forfeited dinners and areduced wardrobe as the possible consequence of her disinterestedness. Tothe honour of her sex, however, hatred of Lily prevailed over morepersonal considerations.

Feeling trapped and disgraced, she turns to thoughts of Selden as her savior and has a change of heart towards him as she looks forward to his next visit at four o'clock. But art thrives on contradictions, and the age-old tensions between faith and desire, between dogmatic formalism and wild, unruly feeling, were precisely what made Davies such a magnificently expressive artist. The bitterness that he could pour into his words, rather than festering or calcifying on-screen, instead bloomed into something fully felt, vividly textured and often indescribably beautiful. And from the beginning, that beauty took on an intimately confessional form. Davies was born in 1945, and his first several movies, starting with the short-film trilogy of “Children” (1976), “Madonna and Child” (1980) and “Death and Transfiguration” (1983), were inspired and indelibly shaped by his postwar Liverpool upbringing.

She was tooself-engrossed to penetrate the recesses of his shyness, and besides, whyshould she care to give herself the trouble? At most it might amuse herto make sport of his simplicity for an evening—after that he would bemerely a burden to her, and knowing this, she was far too experienced toencourage him. But the mere thought of that other woman, who could take aman up and toss him aside as she willed, without having to regard him asa possible factor in her plans, filled Lily Bart with envy. There were moments when such scenes delighted Lily, when they gratifiedher sense of beauty and her craving for the external finish of life;there were others when they gave a sharper edge to the meagreness of herown opportunities. This was one of the moments when the sense of contrastwas uppermost, and she turned away impatiently as Mrs. George Dorset, glittering in serpentine spangles, drew Percy Gryce in her wake to aconfidential nook beneath the gallery.
The moral oppression had produced a physical craving for air, and hestrode on, opening his lungs to the reverberating coldness of the night. At the corner of Fifth Avenue Van Alstyne hailed him with an offer ofcompany. Well, come now,Trenor’s there, anyhow—I—oh, well—the fact is, I’ve no head fornumbers,” he broke off, admonished by the nudge of an adjoining foot, andthe smile that circled the room. He rose, squaring his shoulders aggressively, and stepped toward her witha reddening brow; but she held her footing, though every nerve tore ather to retreat as he advanced.
Lily believes that she can manipulate Gus to do this favor for her by behaving kindly toward him, but what she does not realize is that this conversation with Gus marks the beginning of his attraction to her. Over the course of the next few months, Lily’s financial investment seems to bear fruits, as Gus hands her thousand-dollar checks. However, in the meantime, Lily also learns that Percy Gryce is now engaged to Evie Van Osburgh, and realizes that her opportunity to secure a safe financial future for herself is once again compromised. The novel opens on a hot afternoon in September, as Lily has just missed a train to go to Bellomont, where her friends Judy and Gus Trenor are organizing a party. Her acquaintance Lawrence Selden, who runs into her at Grand Central Station, spends a few hours with her, distracting her waiting alone in the hot city.
Two or three red farm-houses dozed under the apple-trees,and the white wooden spire of a village church showed beyond the shoulderof the hill; while far below, in a haze of dust, the high-road ranbetween the fields. In the woody hollows of the park there was already a faint chill; but asthe ground rose the air grew lighter, and ascending the long slopesbeyond the high-road, Lily and her companion reached a zone of lingeringsummer. The path wound across a meadow with scattered trees; then itdipped into a lane plumed with asters and purpling sprays of bramble, whence, through the light quiver of ash-leaves, the country unrolleditself in pastoral distances.
But thesallow preoccupied women, with their bags and note-books and rolls ofmusic, were all engrossed in their own affairs, and even those who sat bythemselves were busy running over proof-sheets or devouring magazinesbetween their hurried gulps of tea. Gradually, to be sure, the stress of the old thoughts would return; butat least they did not importune her waking hour. The drug gave her amomentary illusion of complete renewal, from which she drew strength totake up her daily work. The strength was more and more needed as theperplexities of her future increased. But to Lily herself, aware that thelegacy could not be put to such a use, the preliminary training seemed awasted effort.

Trenor tries to exploit his generosity to make a romantic move, but Lily spurns his attentions. Bertha still has feelings for Lawrence notwithstanding her recent breakup with him. When it becomes clear that Seldon still has feelings for Lily, she aims to ruin the latter's budding romance with Percy by filling him in on the most salacious and scandalous rumors about Lily's card-playing and past romantic life.
“I am chucking it away because I must go, if you’ll have the goodness tocall a cab for me,” Lily returned with a smile. Trenor drained the glass he had filled for himself, and paused to set itdown before he answered. Suddenly she raised her eyes with the beseeching earnestness of a child.“You never speak to me—you think hard things of me,” she murmured.
It was difficult to define her beyond saying that sheseemed to exist only as a hostess, not so much from any exaggeratedinstinct of hospitality as because she could not sustain life except in acrowd. The collective nature of her interests exempted her from theordinary rivalries of her sex, and she knew no more personal emotion thanthat of hatred for the woman who presumed to give bigger dinners or havemore amusing house-parties than herself. Trenor’s bank-account, almost always assured her ultimate triumph insuch competitions, success had developed in her an unscrupulous goodnature toward the rest of her sex, and in Miss Bart’s utilitarianclassification of her friends, Mrs. Trenor ranked as the woman who wasleast likely to “go back” on her.
Yes, the Furies mightsometimes sleep, but they were there, always there in the dark corners, and now they were awake and the iron clang of their wings was in herbrain.... She opened her eyes and saw the streets passing—the familiaralien streets. Everything in the pastseemed simple, natural, full of daylight—and she was alone in a place ofdarkness and pollution.—Alone! Her eyes fell on an illuminated clock at a street corner, and shesaw that the hands marked the half hour after eleven. Only half-pasteleven—there were hours and hours left of the night!
The hall was arcaded, with a gallery supported on columns of pale yellowmarble. Tall clumps of flowering plants were grouped against a backgroundof dark foliage in the angles of the walls. On the crimson carpet adeer-hound and two or three spaniels dozed luxuriously before the fire, and the light from the great central lantern overhead shed a brightnesson the women’s hair and struck sparks from their jewels as they moved. “And at this hour of the day I don’t suppose you’ve a single one left, have you, Lily? Mrs. George Dorset, regardless of the mild efforts of a traveller with acarpet-bag, who was doing his best to make room for her by getting out ofthe train, stood in the middle of the aisle, diffusing about her thatgeneral sense of exasperation which a pretty woman on her travels notinfrequently creates.

Other young ladies of fashionhad been thus “set up,” selling their hats by the mere attraction of aname and the reputed knack of tying a bow; but these privileged beingscould command a faith in their powers materially expressed by thereadiness to pay their shop-rent and advance a handsome sum for currentexpenses. And even could it havebeen found, how were the ladies on whose approval she depended to beinduced to give her their patronage? Gerty learned that whatever sympathyher friend’s case might have excited a few months since had beenimperilled, if not lost, by her association with Mrs. Hatch. Once again,Lily had withdrawn from an ambiguous situation in time to save herself-respect, but too late for public vindication.

The remark was uttered with a little air of proprietorship not lost onits object, who concealed a faint blush of annoyance by stooping to pickup the book he had dropped at Lily’s approach. The latter’s eyes widenedcharmingly and she broke into a light laugh. Miss Bart, accordingly, rose the next morning with the most earnestconviction that it was her duty to go to church. She tore herself betimesfrom the lingering enjoyment of her breakfast tray, rang to have her greygown laid out, and despatched her maid to borrow a prayer-book from Mrs.Trenor. It was Mrs. Trenor’s theory that her daughters actually did go to churchevery Sunday; but their French governess’s convictions calling her to therival fane, and the fatigues of the week keeping their mother in her roomtill luncheon, there was seldom any one present to verify the fact. “You see I came after all,” he said; but before she had time to answer,Mrs.

She was vexed to see that, in spite of so many years ofvigilance, she had blundered twice within five minutes. That stupid storyabout her dress-maker was bad enough—it would have been so simple totell Rosedale that she had been taking tea with Selden! But, after havinglet herself be surprised in a falsehood, it was doubly stupid to snub thewitness of her discomfiture.

Mrs. Peniston had chosen the wrong moment toboast of her niece’s charms. Mrs. Peniston, on whom she had looked in a day or two after the dinner, laid down her crochet-work and turned abruptly from her oblique survey ofFifth Avenue. She smiled as she spoke, letting her eyes rest on his in a way that tookthe edge from her banter and made him suddenly malleable to her will. The fact that the remark was in distinctly bad taste did not make it anyeasier to answer, for Lily was vividly aware that it was not the momentfor that drawing up of her slim figure and surprised lifting of the browsby which she usually quelled incipient signs of familiarity.

She did not like Trenor’s unusual excitability, with its too evidentexplanation, and the thought of being alone with him, with her friend outof reach upstairs, at the other end of the great empty house, did notconduce to a desire to prolong their TETE-A-TETE. He had taken her hand, half-banteringly, and was drawing her toward a lowseat by the hearth; but she stopped and freed herself quietly. The former, at Selden’s approach, paused in the careful selection of acigar from one of the silver boxes invitingly set out near the door.

Carry is also known for bringing newcomers into high society such as Rosedale and the Wellington Brys, who had managed the miracle of making money in a falling market. After Lily has been expelled from the upper class by Bertha, Carry is one of the few people who still show compassion toward her, offering Lily support and job opportunities. Carry is an example of a woman who finds ways to earn money and to succeed in society despite being divorced and somewhat disreputable. Her presence in the story refutes the notion that Lily has no choice except to self-destruct.
He noticed the other faces, vague with fear and conjecture—he saw thelandlady’s imposing bulk sway professionally toward him; but he shrankback, putting up his hand, while his eyes mechanically mounted the steepblack walnut stairs, up which he was immediately aware that his cousinwas about to lead him. ” Gerty cried in a strange voice, “how could you get here soquickly? ”—and the trembling hand she laid on him seemed instantly toclose about his heart. Slowly the thought of the word faded, and sleep began to enfold her. Shestruggled faintly against it, feeling that she ought to keep awake onaccount of the baby; but even this feeling was gradually lost in anindistinct sense of drowsy peace, through which, of a sudden, a darkflash of loneliness and terror tore its way. The poor little working-girl who had found strength to gather up thefragments of her life, and build herself a shelter with them, seemed toLily to have reached the central truth of existence.

Judy suffers from frequent headaches and avoids noisy environments such as the opera. She must sometimes cancel minor engagements on short notice, and prefers to stay at Bellomont when her head hurts. Bertha Dorset (Mrs. George Dorset)—A petite and pretty high-society matron whose husband George is extremely wealthy. She is first introduced catching the train to Bellomont where she boards with great fanfare and commotion. She demands that the porter find her a seat with her friends, Lily and Percy. Once at Bellomont Judy Trenor intimates to Lilly that Bertha is manipulative and also unscrupulous such that it is better to have her as a friend rather than an enemy.
Lily breasted the storm of enquiries asbest she could, explaining that she had had an attack of faintness on herway back from Carry Fisher’s; that, fearing she would not have strengthto reach home, she had gone to Miss Farish’s instead; but that a quietnight had restored her, and that she had no need of a doctor. “I must have been over-tired last night; I think I had a nervous attackin the carriage,” she said, as the drink brought clearness to hersluggish thoughts. She glanced shyly at Lily, asking in an embarrassed tone how she felt;Lily answered with the same constraint, and raised herself up to drinkthe tea.
She was dining with Mrs. Fisher, who had gathered at an informal feast afew of the performers of the previous evening. There was to be plantationmusic in the studio after dinner—for Mrs. Fisher, despairing of therepublic, had taken up modelling, and annexed to her small crowded housea spacious apartment, which, whatever its uses in her hours of plasticinspiration, served at other times for the exercise of an indefatigablehospitality. Lily was reluctant to leave, for the dinner was amusing, andshe would have liked to lounge over a cigarette and hear a few songs; butshe could not break her engagement with Judy, and shortly after ten sheasked her hostess to ring for a hansom, and drove up Fifth Avenue to theTrenors’.
Thistallied with the assurance, also confidentially imparted, that, neverhaving played bridge before, she had been “dragged into it” on the nightof her arrival, and had lost an appalling amount of money in consequenceof her ignorance of the game and of the rules of betting. He liked the ease and glitter of thelife, and the lustre conferred on him by being a member of this group ofrich and conspicuous people. But he thought it a very materialisticsociety; there were times when he was frightened by the talk of the menand the looks of the ladies, and he was glad to find that Miss Bart, forall her ease and self-possession, was not at home in so ambiguous anatmosphere. As she reached Fiftieth Street the clouds broke abruptly, and a rush ofcold rain slanted into her face.
